Is an MBA worth it in India?

MBA GD topic: IIM Ahmedabad's 2026 median pay, NIRF salaries by rank, IIM fees, the payback sum, points for and against an MBA, and sample lines to open.

BeginnerControversial topic 7 min read

This topic asks whether the time and money spent on an MBA come back as a better career in India. An MBA is a two-year postgraduate degree in management. Students usually get in through an entrance exam such as the CAT, and many colleges offer the same course under the name PGDM.

It is in the news because the numbers at the top are large and the gap below them is wide. IIM Ahmedabad's audited placement report, dated 27 August 2026, gives a median guaranteed cash pay of ₹32.5 lakh for its 2026 batch. At the same time, NIRF data for 2025 show that the typical salary falls steeply as you go down the ranked list of management colleges.

Background

The cost is easiest to see at the top. IIM Lucknow's fee notice for the 2026-28 batch lists ₹10,95,000 for year one and ₹9,80,000 for year two. That is a total of ₹20.75 lakh. Mess charges are extra. Fees at other colleges differ, so check the notice of the college you are considering.

The pay at the top is also clear. IIM Ahmedabad's 2026 report covers 392 students who sought placement and accepted offers, out of 402 eligible. The median total guaranteed cash was ₹32.5 lakh, the mean was ₹32.47 lakh, and the highest offer was ₹99.94 lakh.

Below the top, the picture changes. NIRF 2025 collects each college's own figure for the median salary of its placed MBA graduates. Taking the middle college of each rank band, the median salary is ₹28 lakh for ranks 1 to 10 and ₹18.5 lakh for ranks 11 to 25. It is ₹12.5 lakh for ranks 26 to 50 and ₹8.8 lakh for ranks 51 to 100.

The payback sum depends on three things: the fee, the pay after the MBA, and the pay you would have earned anyway. The widget lets you set all three and shows the year in which you break even.

Points in favour

These points support the view that an MBA is worth it.

  • Pay at top colleges is high. IIM Ahmedabad's median total guaranteed cash in 2026 was ₹32.5 lakh. NIRF data for 2025 put the middle top-10 college at ₹28 lakh.
  • The fee can be recovered fast at the top. IIM Lucknow charges ₹20.75 lakh for two years. A median offer from a top-10 college is larger than that fee in a single year.
  • Campus placement gives a structured route to employers. At IIM Ahmedabad, all 392 students who sought placement in 2026 accepted an offer. A student does not have to find recruiters alone.
  • It opens a door from any background. IIM Ahmedabad says its students come from arts, commerce, science, engineering, technology and medicine. So an MBA can help a graduate move into a function such as finance or marketing that the first degree did not cover.

Points against

These points support the view that an MBA is not worth it for everyone.

  • Pay falls fast down the list. In NIRF 2025, the middle college in ranks 51 to 100 reports a median salary of ₹8.8 lakh, against ₹28 lakh for the top 10. The lowest college in the data reports ₹3.25 lakh.
  • The cost is more than the fee. The fee is ₹20.75 lakh at IIM Lucknow, and a student who leaves a job also gives up two years of salary. Interest on an education loan adds to this.
  • Headline figures hide the spread. At IIM Ahmedabad the highest offer was ₹99.94 lakh and the median was ₹32.5 lakh. The median maximum earning potential, which includes variable pay, was ₹37 lakh, so part of the headline is not guaranteed.
  • Most figures are reported by the colleges themselves. The NIRF salary data are submitted by the institutes and are not audited. IIM Ahmedabad's report is audited, but the audit checks the offers that recruiters report, not what the student earns later.

Opening the discussion

You can open with a question. "Is the question whether an MBA pays off, or whether this MBA pays off? The median pay at IIM Ahmedabad was ₹32.5 lakh in 2026, but in NIRF's ranks 51 to 100 it is ₹8.8 lakh." This works when you want to move the group from a yes or no answer to a condition.

You can open with a fact. "IIM Lucknow charges ₹20.75 lakh for its 2026-28 batch, and IIM Ahmedabad's median offer this year was ₹32.5 lakh, so at the top the fee is about eight months of that median pay." This works when you want a number that the group can test.

You can open with a definition of worth. "Let us define worth as the years it takes to earn back the fee and two years of lost salary." This works when the group is arguing about brand and prestige, because it gives everyone the same measure.

Concluding the discussion

A good conclusion says that the degree is not the deciding factor, and that the college and the fee are. Most groups agree on "worth it at a good college, and a risk elsewhere".

"We heard that top colleges pay a median of ₹28 lakh or more and recover the fee within a year, and also that pay falls to about ₹9 lakh in the lower half of the ranked list. So an MBA is worth it when the college's placement record, audited if possible, is strong enough to cover the fee and the two years of lost pay."

Mistakes to avoid

  • Quoting the highest package as the typical one. Use the median. The highest offer at IIM Ahmedabad in 2026 was about three times the median.
  • Treating IIM numbers as the average for MBAs in India. NIRF's own data show that the typical pay for ranks 51 to 100 is under a third of the top-10 figure. Say which tier you mean.
  • Counting the fee only. A fair payback sum includes the salary given up and any loan interest. Say that you have included them.
  • Saying an MBA is useless or essential. Both claims fall apart on the data above. A balanced answer names the college tier, the fee and the pay.
